Indonesian Community in Qatar

The Indonesian community in Qatar has been present in the country since the early 1990s. Today, there are approximately 23,551 Indonesian citizens in Qatar. Indonesians work in a variety of sectors, including oil and gas, IT/telecommunications, hospitality, banking, aviation, construction, transportation, education, agriculture as well as domestic fields.

The Indonesian community in Qatar is a diverse and vibrant. There are several third generations of Indonesian citizens who were born in Qatar, and the community is active in a variety of cultural and social activities.

In 2001, the Association of Indonesian Communities in Qatar (PERMIQA) was established to serve as an umbrella association for Indonesians. It provides a forum for coordination and activity facilities for Indonesian citizens in Qatar. PERMIQA together with the Indonesian Embassy plays an important role in promoting Indonesian culture and traditions in Qatar.

There are currently around 74 Indonesian community groups in Qatar, formed based on various reasons, including ethnicity, alumni, hobbies, cultural arts, business and economics, education, and professional organizations. These groups actively participate in various events conducted both by the Embassy of Indonesia in Qatar and Qatari entities including volunteering programs and performances at Fan Zones during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.

In 2023, Indonesia was appointed as the partner country for Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture (QIYOC). This platform puts the relationships between Indonesia and Qatar on a higher level, particularly with regards to people-to-people contact.
